藁（わら）で編み上げた遠野の冬の民具です。 柔らかく保湿に優れた藁で作られた雪ぐつは、素足で履くと包まれるようで足の裏が気持ち良く、雪の上に小判型の足跡が残ります。 雪ぐつは藁でできた履物の中でも特に手間がかかるため、祖父母が冬の時期に孫たちにつくってあげる、愛のこもった履き物でした。子どもたちは雪の上をこの雪ぐつを履いて学校に通ったそうです。 このわら靴を作っているのは、遠野市宮守町在住、92歳の佐々木俊一さんです。16歳の頃から、炭焼きの仕事に履いていくため、草履やつまごと呼ばれる藁ぐつを自分で作っていました。ゴム製の安価な商品が輸入されるようになるとわら靴づくりは一旦休止し酪農業等に従事するも、ここ十数年は数少ない技術者の一人として講習会の講師を務めるなど技術継承に励んでいます。 かつては、ごくあたりまえだった農閑期の手仕事も、現在ではその技術を持った人は少なくなっています。 しかし草履や草鞋（わらじ）は今も伝統芸能や舞台の演劇で使われており、日本の暮らしを伝える道具として役割があります。 所属や地域の垣根を越えた学び合いと交流の場「つくる大学」では、藁の履き物の作り手を増やしていこうと、俊一さんから技術を継承する活動を2021年から行っています。 だいたい月に1回集まり、遠野に現存する水車で藁打ちを行って、俊一さんから美しい履き物の作り方を習っています。 現在は、機械で稲刈りすることが多いため、素材となる長くしなやかな藁を手に入れることも難しくなっていますが、市内の農家さんから譲っていただいたものを使用しています。 ※代金の一部は技術継承の場の運営・維持に当てられます。 商品ラインナップ 大（26cm） 中（24cm） 小（18cm） 記載の長さは底のサイズです。 高さは大で26センチあります。 ※手づくり品のため、多少の誤差はあります。あらかじめご了承ください。 ※サイズのリクエスト承ります。1週間程度お時間をいただく場合があります。 【つくる大学/わらぐつ技術継承の会 活動レポート】 https://note.com/tsukuru_univ/n/n65b40a0a5f7d This is a winter footwear woven from rice straw. Rice straw boots have been worn for centuries in Northern Japan to keep feet warm and prevent slipping on snowy roads. When worn barefoot, your feet are wrapped in the soft and moisture-retaining straw. Compared to sandals, straw boots take a lot of work to make, so grandparents used to make them for their lovely grandchildren in winter. Children wore these boots to school in the snow. The craftsman of these straw shoes is Mr. Shunichi Sasaki, a 92-year-old man in Tono, small city of Northeast Japan. He has been making straw sandals and shoes by himself since he was 16 years old to wear to work as a charcoal burner. Straw shoes handicrafts were once commonplace during the off-farm season, but today there are fewer and fewer people who have the skills. Straw shoes are still used in traditional performing arts and have a role to convey the Japanese way of life. Since 2021, we have been working to hand down the skills of making straw shoes from Shunichi-san as an important culture. We get together once a month and learn how to make beautiful footwear.
